The U-20 World Cup begins tomorrow.

The Azzurrini are in a group with Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago, and hosts Egypt. They open with Paraguay tomorrow.

Unfortunatly because this is all taking place in September, some players that were eligable for selection will not be released by their Clubs.  Mario Balotelli, Davide Santon, Andrea Poli, Alberto Paloschi, Stefano Okaka, Fernando Forestieri, Federico Macheda and Guido Marilungo  are players we won't be seeing on the pitch.

Here is the squad Italy has brought to the World Cup:

Goalkeepers: Fiorillo (Sampdoria), Gasparri (Giulianova), Piccolo (Juventus);

Defenders: Albertazzi (Milan), Bini (Piacenza), Bruscagin (Gubbio), Calderoni (Piacenza), Crescenzi (Grosseto), Gentili (Varese), Mazzotta (Lecce), Regini (Sampdoria);

Midfielders: Bonaventura (Atalanta), Della Penna (Roma), Mazzarani (Crotone), Mustacchio (Ancona), Raggio Garibaldi (Genoa), Romizi (Reggiana), Sciacca (Catania);

Strikers: Eusepi (Reggiana), Maritato (Gallipoli), Misuraca (Vicenza).

I attended a few games when the under 20 world cup was in Toronto but Italy didn't have a team for the competition back then since they were more interested in the under 21 world cup .. i never understood why theres an under 20 AND an under 21.

I think Italy has a lot of future talent that eventually will become future azzuri which is comforting since I really don't have faith in our current national team. The latest pattern I noticed is the the 12 year pattern italy goes through .. 82, 94, 2006 .. italy made the finals... so maybe in 12 years we'll see some of these products of the youth team take them to the finals.
