I think this topic has been all over italian media and while some people think he's a complete nut job other can see him for his talent. IMO, he could potentially be the next Roberto Baggio to the italian national team and could be the trequartista we need up front.

I agree, Lippi does have to get off the beaten path with some of these players.  But Casano?  I just don't know about this guy. He’s a loaded gun.  Don’t get me wrong, Casano is an amazing player; He’s just too emotionally unstable.  I understand why Lippi doesn’t want him, especially at an international level.

Calls for Cassano increase
Monday 21 September, 2009
Sampdoria director of sport Beppe Marotta has been joined by England manager Fabio Capello in backing Antonio Cassano for a return to the Italy squad.

The 27-year-old has started the season in sparkling form, inspiring Sampdoria to first place in Serie A with four straight wins.

Cassano has been repeatedly ignored by Italy Coach Marcello Lippi who has issues with his temperament and the fact he doesn't play for one of Italy's top three.

Capello signed Cassano while at Roma in 2001 and was widely praised for getting the best out of Italy's most exciting yet immature attacking talent.

“When I see Cassano play, he reminds me of the player I had in Rome, but I don't know what he does off the pitch,” Capello told Radio Anch'io Sport.

“I have always said that he is the biggest Italian talent and I hope that one day he will be included in the squad for the World Cup.”

Asked if he would call him up, Capello replied cleverly, saying: “He is not English!”

Meanwhile, Marotta continued his almost daily campaign to get Cassano the recognition he deserves.

“It's obvious that Cassano delights people with his extraordinary play. I cannot do more than wish Antonio the best because he deserves a call up,” Marotta said in an interview with Sampdorianews.net.

Cassano and Samp are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Fiorentina who were heavily beaten by Roma yesterday evening.

Cassano: I've changed
Friday 25 September, 2009
Antonio Cassano has given a very candid interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport, explaining how he has managed to turn his career around.

The 27-year-old Sampdoria striker has put in some inspirational performances this season, but past behaviour has made Marcello Lippi reluctant to call him up for the Italy squad.

He tells a story about his time in Spain, which is widely regarded as the nadir of his young career.

“We trained all week in Madrid. Then, given that I was out of the team, I took a private jet with my cousin Franco and we went back to Rome for three days,” Cassano revealed.

“It was there that I really looked myself in the face and said: 'you're heading for an ugly ending.' These are things I have never told anyone, not even my mother.

“I listened to Franco. I reflected on it and said to myself: 'this guy is right. I don't like myself anymore. Worse still, I am throwing my career away because of my lousy attitude. Now I am going to show him if I am truly a man. And considering myself to be such a man, something sprung up inside of me and I said: 'let's see where I end up.'”

Cassano then asked himself several other questions, all of which revealed just how different he is from the so-called Bari brat who used to play for Roma.

“If you were to ask me what I would like the most from life at this moment in time, I would respond: 'Nothing, who is happier than me?'

“Where would I be now if I had gone directly to Samp from Roma with all that Samp have given me and the atmosphere here? But lads the strongest team in the world called me. I had to go to Real Madrid.

“Sure, in hindsight it was a mistake, because what followed was a year out of the team, but it strengthened my spirit. I understood many things.

“In that period I did a lot of stupid things, which, looking back, I would pay not to repeat. Nevertheless, as Califano sang, when you go to play for Real Madrid, with all respect to the other clubs, 'everything else is boring'.”

I didn't want to create a whole new thread for this.  I just finish reading an article regarding the Totti question and is Lippi trying to get him on the squad.  I don't understand why the media entertains this topic so much. The guy retired from La Nationale; next?  I just feel strong about moving on. working on new and upcoming players.

It's time to move on.

Lippi tough on Cassano
Tuesday 6 October, 2009
Italy Coach Marcello Lippi claims the Press have really bugged him about Sampdoria playmaker Antonio Cassano.

Lippi chose not to select Cassano for Italy's upcoming World Cup Qualifiers and in doing so went against popular opinion.

The Italian Press have really campaigned for the 27-year-old's inclusion citing the fact he appears more mature and consistently plays well in Serie A.

When asked about Cassano, Lippi replied: “You have bugged me.”

He quickly moved on to state the importance of getting a victory against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

“This is the most important week for us in the two years of qualification. I want to talk about Italy. There are no more David and Goliath situations.

“We expect an Ireland team similar to the one that has done so well [so far]. However, we have to get some points and we want to qualify on Saturday.

“It's important to come away with a result. Trapattoni knows how to rally his players, and I am not expecting any relaxation.

“We have to focus on this game. We cannot think about getting just one point as this will be dangerous,” Lippi concluded.

Italy can qualify for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa if they beat the Republic of Ireland.

I think at this point...give it up ppl.  Lippi clearly wants nothing to do with the guy.

Can you imagine the crap Lippi will have to deal with if Italy under-performs in the W/C.  One of the first questions Lippi will have to face will be in  reference to Cassanos absents on the squad.

wow .. even his ex-teammate are against him. But DeRossi needs to understand cassano isn't meant to be a scorer on the team he should be used as a trequartista similar to what totti was used for in the past and how many goals has totti scored for the national team with all his appearances ?

De Rossi: "Cassano doesn't score"
Wednesday 7 October, 2009
Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has backed Marcello Lippi's decision to exclude Antonio Cassano from the Italy squad, saying he doesn't score enough goals.

Cassano has been magnificent this season, producing a number of match-winning performances that appear to have convinced everyone apart from Lippi.

When asked about Cassano's exclusion, De Rossi replied: “He is among the most talented and entertaining Italian strikers. But if we go and look at his goalscoring record, it's clear that the players who are here with the Italy squad score more than him or even that other players with better records have also been left out.”

De Rossi then turned his attention to speculation regarding the future of Francesco Totti, who could come out of international retirement.

“It would be a pleasant surprise. I don't believe that Totti will remain indifferent to the fascination of the World Cup, but at 33 he has made a decision and also assumed his responsibilities.

“When he left the Azzurri, he clarified that he did it because he couldn't manage to play 60 games a year. Only now are we all agreed that it was true. Back then we thought he held a grudge against Donadoni…” De Rossi concluded.
