This has been a rumour that has been circling ever since totti retired. Will he return to help out a struggling Italy ? While I have to say our problem is very much in the midfield .. i think totti's value as a player has gone down compared to the playmaker he once was. If I was to choose I would pick Cassano 100 times over totti. Even though totti could be used .. i don't think he would the one to take this team to the next level.

Lippi open to Totti return
Tuesday 13 October, 2009
Italy Coach Marcello Lippi wouldn't exclude the possibility of calling up Francesco Totti if he decided to come out of international retirement.

A number of people including Claudio Ranieri, Arrigo Sacchi and even wife Ilary Blasi have called for Totti to return to the Azzurri.

La Gazzetta dello Sport carried a story this morning revealing that if Lippi were to call Totti in May and he was fit then he wouldn't be able to say no.

Totti quit La Nazionale in 2007, telling journalists he could no longer play 60 games a year and that he was tired of them questioning his commitment.

Lippi and Totti formed a very close relationship in the build up to the World Cup in 2006.

When Totti broke a metatarsal just months before the tournament, Lippi visited him in hospital and told him that he would wait for him.

“I don't exclude anything. I will have to make technical judgements on the group of players that I now have available to me,” Lippi explained.

“And I'll also be looking among the players that aren't here, and also names that have never been made [in relation to the Italy squad], to see if they have the necessary technical characteristics to play in my national team.”

What is all this nonsense of Tottis return?  Don’t get me wrong, the guy was great. But don’t you think it’s time to focus on new blood?

no need for totti. He can stay where he is! He might be great in the league but not successful when it comes to the azzurri. Similar to Toni who scored a whack of goals in the league and didn't do much for the NT.
